Production Services Requirements for Filming in Nepal

Filming in Nepal is one of the biggest experiences you will have as a film maker or a photographer. While working on a foreign commercial a while ago we remember the Director of Photography saying- “ there is nothing for me to do, everywhere I place the camera it’s like a ‘picture perfect frame’. Indeed Nepal is a beautiful and unique country, and we would like you to benefit from all it has to offer. Nepa~laya takes pride in making your shoot a stress free pleasant experience, starting from the preparation of the budget for your project, right up to the drop off at the airport back to your final destination.

Once you confirm our budget, a process of obtaining a government issued permit begins.

Short list of requirements to Film in Nepal.

To keep it simple please take a moment and look at the short list of requirements in order to film in Nepal. We deal with obtaining the permit for you.

  • Filling out a Nepal Ministry of Communication Permit Form (*Downloadable file on our website.)
  • Write up a Short Synopsis of the proposed film/ or project.
  • Photo copy of Producer’s passport (Only Photo Page).
  • Names & Passport numbers of all Crew members arriving to Nepal.
  • Writing an Authorization Letter- This letter confirms to the Ministry that we are hired by you and are dealing with formalities for you. To be put on your company’s letterhead. (*A format/ example is Downloadable on our website.)
  • Customs clearances List of Equipment- We need a list of all equipment you will be bringing into the country with serial numbers and estimated value.

Note: -Permits and Customs Clearances- Are not a problem, we deal with the authorities for you. There is a process of obtaining a film permit and a customs clearance. In order to film in Nepal there are few govt. fees. & a govt. liaison appointed. We would have to know in advance the equipment brought into the country. A member of our team then greets you and your crew inside the airport upon arrival and clears you and equipment through customs. As far as we know CARNET FORMS are not accepted in Nepali customs. To obtain the govt. issued Filming Permit all you need to do is fill in the Downloadable Files on our website send us the short list of requirements listed above and we’ll take care of the rest.

This is the only legal way to film in Nepal. Permits are essential as we can be asked at any given moment by the authorities what we are filming on location, if we do not have a permit anything can happen, including termination of the shoot, equipment seized, and unnecessary delays.
